"MJ", aka "Emmie", aka "The Divine Miss M" is busy, busy, busy. At 4 1/2 years old, this gal has boundless energy. She is like a Border Collie in a basset hound body! She runs everywhere! Emmie is friendly and loves people of all ages, and gets along well with other dogs. Emmie is housebroken and not particularly destructive, however, she is having to learn NOT to put her feet up on cabinetry or window sills, and not to jump on people! She is definitely a counter surfer, if given the opportunity.
If you are looking for a mellow, low energy companion, Emmie is NOT the dog for you! Emmie is a great choice for someone wanting a basset hound for agility, or for a jogging partner, or who wants her for fenced acreage, where she can run. Emmie would LOVE to have a "job". She is a good dog, but needs physical exercise and mental stimulation to be happiest. Watch the video of MJ playing with her chocolate Lab friend, Kona. Although Emmie previously lived with a cat, she is NOT recommended for a home with cats, except for completely "bomb-proof" cats that don't run from dogs. She LOVES to chase cats--and squirrels. Take a look at the video, below, which shows Emmie trying to play with the cat in her foster home. Emmie rides wonderfully well in the car, and despite her high energy, she does settle down for naps, and she sleeps through the night. In her foster home, she sleeps in a dog bed on the floor in the kitchen. In a previous foster home, Emmie exhibited some "resource guarding" when ejected from the foster mom's chair. However, in her current foster home, where she has no access to the furniture, she has shown no resource guarding at all--not with people, nor with other dogs. She sleeps contentedly on dog beds, and is particularly drawn to her "own" bed, (as opposed to sleeping on the beds of the other dogs in the home). Although Emmie LOVES children, because of her exuberance and the observed resource guarding of the furniture, Emmie is not recommended for a home with infants, or very small children. Emmie is happy, very playful, sometimes noisy, whines a lot, and she is OK being left home alone, particularly if she has a doggie companion. She travels very well. Her ideal home would be one that can provide her with the training, activity and structure that she needs. Emmie is eager to please, but just doesn't seem to have received much training. Some good positive reinforcement training would probably do wonders for this girl. Please read, below, about Emmie's special needs: Special Needs: MJ has two medical issues. She is blind from glaucoma in her left eye. Her right eye is still OK, although she is on medication to prevent glaucoma in that eye. She gets eye drops twice a day, and she is very good about holding still to have her drops put in. (She gets a cookie afterward). The pressure in both eyes needs to be monitored by a veterinarian, or canine ophthalmologist. The second issue is itchy skin. MJ has allergies, which cause her to be itchy. She may require frequent baths to stay comfortable. Video of MJ:
