Sophie came to GGBR from the Contra Costa County animal control in Martinez where she was picked up as a stray. As a result of her being stray for so long, Little Sophie was very ill when she came to GGBR. She had a terrible cough and her skin was irritated from a condition that had been untreated for quite a long time. After a few days her health improved and it became clear that this little girl is very young. Her demeanor is puppy like and she has even been observed chasing her own tail. She shadows the older bassets in the house and playfully bites and mouths her foster mom and dad. As sick as she was Ms. Sophie was a sweet and well behaved girl since the minute she was picked up. Her personality can best be described as happy go lucky and she love to play with her foster brother and sister (both bassets). She is a vocal little dog and often will ‘tell you about’ whatever is going on. She is a little rude when it comes to begging so she will need some special attention to teach her better manners. She loves the car and lies down quietly during rides. Sophie is potty trained for the most part but has three accidents in the house (all puddles). As with any dog she will need reinforcement for potty training when she goes to her new home. Sophie’s favorite activity is sitting next to her foster mom on the couch and chasing her foster brother. Physically Ms. Sophie is the ‘whole package’ when it comes to a basset hound. She is gorgeous tricolor with a perfect white tipped tail. She is tiny for a basset weighing in at 32 lbs. but she can stand to gain a few pounds because she is thin. Her best feature is her coloring and the markings on her face, which look like a delicate little mask. She is pure basset and her whole body wiggles as she walks. She has a mischievous spot near the tip of her tail that is all cuteness. The coloring on her body is mainly white with black spots and large black splotches. Her ears are in perfect proportion to her little figure as well. Ms. Sophie is well on her way to a full recovery. Her cough has lessened tremendously and her skin condition has improved considerably as well. She suffers from seborrhea, which makes the skin flaky, oily, and causes a foul odor. At this time, we are unsure if it is primary or secondary because her skin was in poor condition from her being on the street for so long. The odor was very quite bad when she was picked up but bathing has improved the seborrhea greatly. We hope the condition will continue to improve and eventually be controlled with treatment.
