Hank I adopted Hank in January of 2018, and he is just turning 13. He is wonderful! He is healthy and smart and fun, and continues to be a favorite of my neighborhood. Thank you. Linda Strauss Feb2023
Huxley Huxley joined our family just about a week ago and is settling in nicely. He came to us from a family who had him the first four years of his life but could not keep him due to long term travel conflicts. So, this was a big change for him to have new digs and new humans all at once and all of a sudden. He was very nervous and anxious for the first couple or so days. Gradually, we are seeing his true personality and his very basset traits come through! Today we took him for his first bath and he behaved like a dream. He is very used to having weekly baths and seemed to like most of it except for the drying with cool air part. He is enjoying two walks a day and receiving lots of attention from the three adoring children and two adults in the house. He only barks a little or whines at first when we leave the house for a while and waits in the backyard for us to return. He does have two or three habits which we are working on breaking him of, namely jumping on the couch (dogs do not go on the furniture on our household which is somewhat against basset philosophy!), mouthiness, and jumping on people when excited or meeting new people. Some of this, we hope, is due to the newness and will subside once he is more settled in over time. Nevertheless, we are working on this and he knows when he is being naughty! We have introduced him to marrow bones from the butcher and he is quite happy gnawing on them for extended periods of time. Another of his "habits" is stealing socks and other soft items such as stuffed animals and small pieces of clothing and going on his dog bed for a good slobber session. He is very affectionate, prefers sitting on your feet, and enjoys a good belly rub at the drop of a hat. Comical behavior he sometimes engages in include chasing his tail, sudden bursts of energy where he rips around the house at high speed, and this morning he growled at a fly. He is very good in the car and we can't wait to take him to our family cabin in Lake Tahoe and see if he will swim in the lake or just touch the edge of the water with his paws. All in all, he is a welcome addition to our family and he brings such joy and life to our daily routine. Right now, he is like a new toddler in our home for all of us to take care of while he learns the ropes of his new household! Thanks, Jamie Pehanick and family
Heidi Heidi came to me in May 2010 via the Sonoma County Humane Society and several GGBR volunteers who offered to transport her to me for foster care until she found a forever home. She was going to be the second dog I had fostered. Her age was thought to be about 8 and as it turned out she was heartworm positive, obese and a sick girl. After a 2 month long treatment course for heartworm where she was crated most of the time, you could tell when she began to feel better, a new puppy personality came out. Needless to say after having this little girl for two months I thought if she was good around the grandchildren, maybe I should keep her. That was the wrong thing to do if you really did not want a second dog. I had a dog Beuford a 7 year old with his own story. The grandchildren loved her. I adopted Heidi, a foster failure they called it. She lost the excess weight and as she got better she loved to go on walks, rides in the car and would sit and whine at me right along side Beuford. She and Beuford finally started to bond and her back was often a resting place for Beuford’s head (as evidenced in the attached photo). Everyone loved Heidi and she did not meet a person, dog, or cat that she did not love. She loved Buster the cat and would lick his face like it was her new puppy. Buster being used to dogs just took it until he had enough and would roll over and bat Heidi’s nose saying stop!! Heidi was such a nice addition to the house but it was to be a short stay. She died suddenly on 10/10/10 of Bloat. Although her stay was short, the last months of her life were filled with happy memories of camping, rides in the car, walks, good food, and comfy beds. My life was richer for it. See you at the Bridge, Virginia Tallman, Beuford and Buster
Hunter We fell in love with Hunter the minute we first saw him. He has put on a few pounds and is doing well. As I am home with him all day because of a disability he has made life for us much better. He is also the fastest Basset we ever had. He keeps us on our toes. He sleeps with us and is a real snuggler. He loves his Crazy Critters and loves playing with us. He gets up early and gets his walks and then his rides. We are beginning to wonder, who owns who. We Thank you all for letting us have him as we know he didn,t get a good start on life. He is now a permanent member of our family forever. We love him dearly and would never even think of returning him. As we have had two Bassets before him, there is not much that we have not seen before. Again Thank You all for letting him be a part of our family. Bob and Liz Howe.
Harry When we lost Arfie right before Easter we were devastated. For my husband Rick it was his first boy. He finally had his own dog and he knew that losing him would hurt more than the others and it did. Then we looked at the website and decided to get Harry who was from the Xmas intake. Harry got his name for being a long haired basset but that is what made him more endearing. He is still skittish at times, but has improved over the months that we have had him. Even though he takes a step back his love for his sister Mairzy Doats just gets stronger. She is happy to have a little brother to boss around and she also enjoys the fact that he likes to take a bath with her. She hates baths more than anything but she loves it as long as he is with his big sister. Thank you Harry for making us a whole family again and letting us love you and watch you grow.
